Fuel cells for shipping: To meet on-board auxiliary demand and reduce emissions
نویسندگان
چکیده
The reduction of harmful emissions from the international shipping sector is necessary. On-board energy demand can be categorised as either: propulsion, or auxiliary services. Auxiliary services contribute a significant proportion demand, with major loads including: compressors, pumps, and HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning). Typically, this met using same fuel source main propulsion (i.e. fossil fuels). This study has analysed whether large scale ships could feasibly reduced by meeting installing hydrogen cell, data an LNG tanker to develop case study. Simulations have shown that for capacity 10 x 40ft containers compressed hydrogen, optimal cell size would 3 MW save 10600 MWh use, equivalent 2343 t CO2. Hence potentially decarbonise demand. Although there are some notable technical commercial considerations, such lifetime capital expenditure requirements. Results imply if managed avoid peaks in further increase effectiveness concept.

A Novel Diesel Fuel Additive to Improve Fuel Properties and to Reduce Emissions
Global air pollution is a serious threat caused by excessive use of fossil fuels for transportation. Despite the fact that diesel fuel is a big environmental pollutant as it contains different hydrocarbons, sulphur and crude oil residues, it is yet regarded as a highly critical fuel due to its wide applications. Nowadays, biodiesel as a renewable additive is blended with diesel fuel to achie...
متن کاملReducing fuel emissions by optimizing speed on shipping routes
Fuel consumption and emissions on a shipping route are typically a cubic function of speed. Given a shipping route consisting of a sequence of ports with a time window for the start of service, substantial savings can be achieved by optimizing the speed of each leg. This problem is cast as a non-linear continuous program, which can be solved by a non-linear programming solver. We propose an alt...

متن کاملOptimization of Fuel Consumption and Emissions for Auxiliary Power Unit Based on Multi-Objective Optimization Model
Auxiliary power units (APUs) are widely used for electric power generation in various types of electric vehicles, improvements in fuel economy and emissions of these vehicles directly depend on the operating point of the APUs. In order to balance the conflicting goals of fuel consumption and emissions reduction in the process of operating point choice, the APU operating point optimization probl...
متن کاملNeeds and opportunities to reduce black carbon emissions from maritime shipping
Black carbon is the second largest contributor to human-induced climate warming, after carbon dioxide. International shipping is a major source of diesel black carbon emissions and not yet subject to international regulation. This paper investigates the contribution of black carbon from shipping to the global diesel black carbon inventory, by cross comparing results from a number of studies. Wh...
